Trying to identify a sideways scroller 80s game

Postby Jack Daniels on Tue Dec 28, 2010 1:06 am

Hey guys, this is my first post here, how are y'all doin'?

As this subforum seems to be devoted to "name that game" threads, here's one more:

I'm looking for an arcade game from the mid-80s, a horizontal scrolling shoot-em up. You've got some kind of flying craft and you're destroying various evil robots and such, a pretty generic game. But... there are several gateways, or portals throughout the levels that you can choose to enter, which hurtle your ship down suddenly into a new screen, and the scrolling continues. It was cool to have that choice to enter the portal or continue on the level you're currently on, and I can't think of any other scrolling shoot-em up that had that element to it. Well, there was one, called 4-D Warriors, but you only switch back and forth between two levels, and the gameplay was pretty lacking. The game I'm thinking of was much more fun and interesting.

Any thoughts?

Alright, perhaps I could give a little more information so someone will take a stab at it. I was quite young when I played this game, so my memory is a bit vague. I know this game had to have been released around the early or mid-80s, in the USA.

So, you were in a spaceship of some kind, and went through horizontally scrolling levels, through underground caves, if I remember correctly. The graphics of the background were bright, unlike many spaceship games where it's mostly black. Like many of these games, a single hit from anything destroyed your ship. It was a pretty hard game, as I recall.

The most distinguishing feature of this arcade game was these gateways that were found in each level, that were somewhat hexagonal in shape, and metallic looking. If you entered it, a ladder-like glowing extention would pop out and send you down quickly into a lower screen, and the fast-paced game would continue you scrolling into the next screen.

I never got very far in this game, as I was inexperienced. I was just hoping someone would know what game this was, so I could see about finding it again. 8-)

Thanks, y'all
