New cabinet from scratch

Postby gomad on Mon Feb 21, 2011 7:47 am

Hey all,

I have been wanting to create an arcade with mame for some time now, and in April I will move to a new job in Virginia and will finally be able to make one.

I'm basing my design on mameroom's ultimate arcade 2.

I am a bit weird in that I like to change tiny details, for example the control panel I measure to my ideal height and also the monitor angle for the height of my eyes.

I don't know where they got the 180lb aprox weight figure from, since my design assuming 7.25g/cm^3 density for MDF is already at 100kg (220lb) without monitor, electronics, drawer or top panel!

I was thinking of using 1/2 mdf for the back and top. i also tried routing 1 in holes en honeycomb pattern on the insides of the mdf and it shaves off another 9kg

here are the general dimension s in the screenshot below, I have no idea what the normal measurements are, it was just from info i could get from the 27" monitor specs and the rainy days project I saw from Derek and some measurements from myself.

anyone have any idea how hot the crts get? y was thinking put the fans at the diagonal part above the monitor on the back and some in the base where the computer will be, or is that overkill?

I have never looked at an arcade cabinet from the inside, not even from the back haha.

Heya, looks like you've got quite a project in front of you. But it will definitely be a lot of fun!

You can assume that the cabinet will weigh around 80kg without electronics/monitor. It will be very, very heavy with the CP, electronics and monitor inside (I know, because I carried a UA2 cab up 3 stairs and I almost broke my back ;)).

If you contact Scott @ Mameroom.com then I'm sure he will provide you with the exact dimensions and measurements.

The CRT gets hot, but you don't need fans up there at all. Just make sure you cut some vent holes in the back (look at the UA2 blueprints and get an idea where to put them). I had a UA2 with a 27" Makvision running 24/7 in my office and I never had heat problems. I didn't have a single fan in my cabinet (except for the GPU/CPU fans on the motherboard of course).

Looking forward to following your progress! :)
