Ms. Pac Man Cocktail version

Hello, Just found this site today. I have taken in a Ms. Pac man cocktail version that is pretty much all original from 1980 something. I think it has had a new monitor sometime but not sure. this unit has been in my uncles bowling alley for about 20 years or so. It has gum, scratches and all kinds of damage. I would like to clean it up and have it in my home for fun.

The sound doesn't work. The speaker is disconnected. When I hook it up, it is a solid tone. I tried a different speaker with the same results.

The monitor is playable but very fuzzy and not too bright. I have tried playing with the adjustment pots but cannot get it to get crisp clear like it used to be.

The main thing I am wondering is to know if the sound is ecomomically viable to fix. I am sure it is fixable, but what would that cost to replace the sound card? Also, is the monitor able to be adjusted further than what I already tried?

I am an engineer but by no means am I smart on computer boards and such. I would be taking it to a local place to get it looked at, just wondered what you guys though before I called. Thank you for your help. -Ryan

Hi Ryan and welcome to AF!

I think I would've started with cleaning up the cabinet. Sand it down and give it a paint job and maybe apply some new artwork to it. The board can always be replaced if it's broken, but a nice looking cab is always good to have.

It would be nice with some pictures though, so we could have a look at it.

Here are three pictures.... Hope they turn out. I called a local place, he was very helpful and told me to take out the glare screen. The Brightness is a lot better now. I heard the monitor can be replaced with a LCD screen. What should those cost? Where is the sound card for this machine? Is it integrated in the main board. How do you fix and/or replace the sound card? When I plug the speaker in, I am only getting a solid low freq tone.

The sound chip is on the PCB and afaik you can't replace it without replacing the PCB itself. If you're only getting a weird frequency tone when plugging the speaker in then it's most likely a busted PCB. You could replace the monitor with a CGA LCD, but that would take some technical insight and skills.

If you want to completely refurbish this cab I'd try to find a replacement PCB for it.
